Vastu design for Pokhara's climate and views

Pokhara builds differently from Kathmandu. It is one of the wettest cities in Nepal, its views of Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range run to the north, and its ground needs more care than most. A good Pokhara house — or hotel, or homestay — answers all three, and Vastu helps rather than hinders.

The Himalaya to the north: a gift for Vastu

Vastu asks for openness and light to the north and east, and Pokhara puts its greatest asset exactly there. Large windows, balconies and living spaces facing north toward the mountains serve the view and the Vastu at the same time. We keep the south and west more solid — bedrooms, stairs, services and the overhead tank — which also shields the house from the hottest afternoon sun.

Designing for monsoon rain

With very heavy monsoon rainfall, water management is part of the design, not an afterthought. Generous roof overhangs, well-detailed waterproofing, and site drainage that carries water away from the foundations are standard in our Pokhara work. Vastu's preference for land that slopes down toward the north and east lines up neatly with good drainage design: we grade the site so rainwater runs away from the house in those directions.

Know your ground before you build

Parts of Pokhara valley sit on deep, loose deposits and limestone, and some areas — Armala is the best-known example — have experienced sinkholes. Land near the Seti River gorge and close to the lakes needs particular care, and areas around Phewa Lake carry their own building restrictions. We strongly recommend a geotechnical investigation before buying or designing, and we design foundations to its findings. No Vastu benefit is worth building on unsafe ground.

Homes, hotels and homestays

Much of our Pokhara work is hospitality as well as housing. For hotels and homestays, Vastu planning shapes the reception and entrance (north or east where possible), the kitchen (south-east), the owner's quarters (south-west), and guest rooms arranged so that as many as possible enjoy the northern view. Every building is engineered to the Nepal National Building Code for seismic safety.

Permits and costs
