Designing for Chitwan's climate

Chitwan is hot and humid for much of the year, with heavy monsoon rain and rivers — the Narayani, the Rapti and their tributaries — that can rise fast. A house that is comfortable in Bharatpur in June has to shade itself, breathe and stay dry. Vastu, used well, points the same way.

Shade and air first

• Solid south and west: the staircase, stores, toilets and the master bedroom (south-west) take the afternoon sun, as Vastu prescribes, protecting the living rooms.
• Open north and east: large windows, verandas and the living room face the gentle morning light.
• Deep overhangs and verandas keep rain and sun off the walls — a traditional Terai answer that still works.
• Cross-ventilation through every main room, with insect screens on windows and doors, so the house stays cool without running air-conditioning all day.

Flood-aware planning

Low-lying parts of Chitwan have flooded in heavy monsoons. Before design we look at the plot's history: how high water has come, where it drains, how close the nearest river or canal is. We raise the plinth above that level, keep electrical points and the septic tank out of harm's way, and grade the site so water flows away from the building — toward the north and east wherever the land allows, which is also what Vastu prefers.

Homes in Bharatpur and Ratnanagar

Bharatpur has grown quickly as a regional centre for health care, education and trade, and families are building on new plots across the metropolitan city and in Ratnanagar, Khairahani and Kalika. Plots here are often larger and more regular than in Kathmandu, which gives real freedom to get the orientation right from the start: the main entrance on the north or east, the kitchen in the south-east, the puja room in the north-east, and an open centre to the plan.

Hotels and homestays near Sauraha

Around Sauraha and the national park, many enquiries are for hotels, resorts and homestays. Vastu planning shapes the reception and arrival (north or east), the kitchen block (south-east) and the owner's quarters (south-west), while guest rooms are arranged for privacy, garden views and good ventilation. Sites in the park's buffer zone carry their own rules on height, materials and use, so we check those before a design is drawn.

Structure and permits

Every building is engineered to the Nepal National Building Code, including NBC 105 for earthquake design, and we recommend a soil test first — river-laid soils in Chitwan vary a great deal from plot to plot. We prepare the permit drawings for Bharatpur Metropolitan City or your local municipality as part of the design.
